First Day of School information

All of the teachers and staff here are really excited to welcome your children back to school next week and to get the new school year started. As the new principal of Old County Road School, I am particularly enthusiastic to begin the new school year with our students. Here is some important information for the first day of school.

First Day of School

The first day of school for 1st through 5th grade students is Tuesday, August 28, 2018. Kindergarten students will have a screening appointment on either Tuesday, August 28th, Wednesday, August 29th, or Thursday, August 30th. Kindergarten families should have received a letter with details about which day their student should come to school for screening. If your kindergarten child has not received a screening time, please call the school at 401-231-6613. Kindergarten students will have their first school day as a whole class on Friday, August 31, 2018.

First Day of School Packets and Forms

On the first day of school we will be sending home important information with your child, as well as forms to fill out. In order to be more efficient and to save paper, all four elementary schools are sending some of this information directly to families in an email prior to the first day. Attached below are:

  • Memo about Peanut/Tree Nuts and Snacks
  • Annual FERPA and PPRA notifications for families

Student Dismissal Information for the FIRST WEEK

Typically student dismissal during the first week of school can be a little hectic. In an effort to avoid the first day/first week dismissal confusion, we created an online dismissal/transportation information form. Please click the link below and carefully answer each question for each of your children BEFORE Tuesday, August 28th. We will dismiss your children during the FIRST WEEK according to the information you provide in this online form (e.g. taking the bus, being picked up, attending the YMCA after school program, etc.)

Parents/Families and the First Day of School

OCRS has a great tradition of inviting parents/families of 1st through 5th grade students to join us for a short all-school meeting on the first day of school. I'm happy to announce that we will be continuing that tradition on the first day of school this year. Here are the details for how the all-school meeting will proceed:

  • Parents/families that would like to join us should drop off their student(s) on the playground with all of the other students and then proceed into the gymnasium and sit in the stands.
  • At 8:20 a.m. teachers will bring students into the gym and have them sit according to their class. We will have a short all-school meeting to welcome everyone back and to kick-off the school year in a fun and positive way.
  • When the meeting is complete, teachers and staff will bring students to their classrooms.
  • Parents/families will remain in the stands until all of the students are dismissed and then parents will proceed out of the gymnasium and leave the school through the main entrance. For safety reasons, parents/families will NOT be allowed to walk to their student's classroom.

Backpacks and School Supplies for Families and Students in Need

We are incredibly fortunate to have had a few backpacks donated to the school, as well as some school supplies. If your child is in need of a backpack or some school supplies, please reach out to our School Nurse, Mrs. Sutherland, to let her know (ssutherland [at] smithfield-ps [dot] org).

Bus Routes and Transportation Information

The district office has posted the most current bus routes and transportation information at http://www.smithfield-ps.org/transportation. If you have any questions, you can contact the transportation company, Durham School Services, at 401-349-2770.

I am looking forward to a terrific year at Old County Road School! Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
